What is yoga?

So, what is yoga ? It is a holistic approach that focuses on the practice of breathing, stretching and relaxing. After a good yoga session, you feel like you’ve just had a massage. The benefits of yoga include relaxation of the body and mind, mental calmness, stress reduction, a feeling of peace, increased flexibility and strength, awareness of your body, muscle tone, awareness of your breathing, more energy and slowing down the effects of aging.

Hot yoga is the newest craze. This type of yoga is done in a room with a temperature of 95 -100 degrees. Such energetic yoga sessions at this temperature will cause profuse sweating and makes the body very warm, and therefore more flexible.

Power yoga is a general term used in to describe a vigorous, fitness-based approach to vinyasa style yoga. Power yoga is likely the yoga you will find in gyms across North America. Power yoga does not follow a set series of poses. Therefore, any power yoga class can vary widely from the next. Power yoga focuses on strength and flexibility and is seen as a way to work out. For this reason it will most likely appeal to people who enjoy exercising and are not as interested in the meditation and relaxation benefits of yoga.

In Vinyasa-style-yoga classes, poses will flow from one to another in conjunction with the breath.

Ashtanga yoga is extremely popular. It is a vigorous, athletic style of practice. It appeals to those who like a sense of order and who like to do things independently.

75 minutes of hatha yoga performed by women with fibromyalgia twice weekly over eight weeks reduced pain. According to researchers, cortisol is secreted in response to stress, and women with fibromyalgia have lower than average cortisol levels.

Yoga is a personal exercise. You do what is right for your body. Find a yoga instructor that does not push you to go beyond what feels right. Because it is so personal, it is easy to do by yourself.

Online videos , demonstrations, DVD's and e-books are a great way to practice your yoga on your own.

The yoga accessories you need are a yoga mat, belt and yoga block. It is nice to take a blanket with you to cover up for the meditation portion at the end of the session. Don’t worry if you fall asleep!

Specific yoga apparel is not required however often does make it more comfortable for you. Many people prefer organic yogawear or eco-friendly yoga tools.
